Generic Clarinex, Desloratadine is a long-acting antihistamine.

Histamine is a substance in the body that stimulates the production of mucus and the dilation of blood vessels. Histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and attaches to other cells that have receptors for histamine. The attachment of the histamine to the receptors causes the cell to be \"activated,\" releasing other chemicals, which produce the effects that we associate with allergy. Allergy sufferers recognize histamine\'s effects as a runny nose and swollen nasal passages.

Desloratadine blocks one type of receptor for histamine (the H1 receptor); it prevents activation of cells by histamine, thereby blocking the histamine reaction.

Desloratadine does not readily enter the brain from the blood and, therefore, causes less drowsiness (sedation). It is a member of a small family of non-sedating antihistamines which includes loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and azelastine (Astelin). Desloratadine was approved by the FDA in December, 2001

ADULTS AND CHILDREN 12 AND OLDER

For adults and children 12 and older, the usual dose is 5 milligrams (1 tablet) once a day. If you have kidney or liver disease, the recommended dose is 5 milligrams every other day.

Little is known about the effects of a Generic Clarinex overdose. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

If you miss a dose of Generic Clarinex
Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
The possibility that Generic Clarinex could harm a developing baby has not been completely ruled out, and the drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Generic Clarinex makes its way into breast milk. You\'ll need to choose between nursing and continuing to use the drug.

More common side effects of Generic Clarinex may include:
Dry mouth, fatigue, sleepiness, and sore throat.

Less common side effects of Generic Clarinex may include:
Dizziness, dry throat, flu-like symptoms, muscle pain, nausea.

Rare side effects of Generic Clarinex may include:
Acute allergic reaction, hives, itching, rapid heartbeat, rash, shortness of breath, swelling.

Why should Generic Clarinex not be prescribed?

If Generic Clarinex or the similar drug Claritin gives you an allergic reaction, you\'ll be unable to use this drug.

Special warnings about Generic Clarinex

Do not increase the dose of Generic Clarinex or take it more than once a day. Higher doses have no additional effect on hay fever symptoms and may cause drowsiness.

Generic Clarinex is not approved for children under 12.
