Drug Class: What is Diovan an why is it prescribed?
Generic Diovan is one of a new class of blood pressure medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Generic Diovan works by preventing the hormone angiotensin II from narrowing the blood vessels, which tends to raise blood pressure. Generic Diovan may be prescribed alone or with other blood pressure medications, such as diuretics that help the body get rid of excess water. Generic Diovan HCT provides just such a combination. Generic Diovan HCT contains Generic Diovan plus the common diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Generic Diovan also has a stimulative effect on the heart and is prescribed for heart failure in patients who can't tolerate another type of medication called ACE inhibitors.
Drug Mechanism: How does Diovan work?
Generic Diovan (valsartan) is the second of a group of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and is similar to losartan (Cozaar). As such, it blocks the ability of angiotensin II to constrict or squeeze arteries and veins, thereby reducing blood pressure and reducing the pressure in the arteries that the heart must pump against.
The FDA approved Generic Diovan in December of 1996.
Dosage: How should you take Diovan
Generic Diovan can be taken with or without food. Try to get in the habit of taking the medicine at the same time each day--for example, before or after breakfast. You'll be less likely to forget your dose.
