|Gris-PEG belongs to the group of medicines called antifungals. Gris-PEG is used to treat fungus infections of the skin, hair, fingernails, and toenails. Gris-PEG may be taken alone or used along with medicines that are applied to the skin for fungus infections.|
|Gris-PEG Mechanism: How does Gris-PEG work?|
|Gris-PEG is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails. When given by mouth Gris-PEG concentrates itself in keratin, a protein which is present in all of these areas. Gris-PEG is thought to work by interfering with fungal cell growth and replication. Gris-PEG does not kill an established fungal infection but instead prevents infection of new keratin in these areas. Gris-PEG is frequently used to treat fungal infections of the nail bed and ringworm (tinea) that has not responded to other forms of treatment.|
|Gris-PEG Dosage: How should you take Gris-PEG|
|To minimize stomach irritation and help your body absorb the drug, take Gris-PEG at meal times or with food or whole milk. If you are on a low fat diet, check with your doctor. Observe good hygiene during treatment to help control infection and prevent re-infection. The usual treatment periods for various ringworm infections are: Ringworm of the scalp-4 to 6 weeks Ringworm of the body-2 to 4 weeks Athletes foot-4 to 8 weeks The usual treatment period, depending on the rate of growth, for ringworm of the fingernails is at least 4 months and for ringworm of the toenails at least 6 months. Adults Ringworm of the Body, Groin and Thigh, Scalp The usual dose of Gris-PEG is 375 milligrams a day taken as a single dose or divided into smaller doses, as determined by your doctor. Athletes Foot, Ringworm of the Nails The usual dose of Gris-PEG is 750 milligrams a day divided into smaller doses, as determined by your doctor. Children A single daily dose of Gris-PEG is effective in children with ringworm of the scalp. The usual dose of Gris-PEG is 3.3 milligrams per pound of body weight per day. This means that children weighing 35 to 60 pounds will take 125 to 187.5 milligrams a day, and children weighing more than 60 pounds will take 187.5 to 375 milligrams a day. No dose of Gris-PEG has been established for children 2 years of age and under. If you miss a Gris-PEG dose If you miss a dose of Gris-PEG, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses of Gris-PEG. |Blood thinning medications such as nicoumalone and warfarin are both broken down by Gris-PEG at a faster rate, and so there is an increased risk of a blood clot developing. |Most Important Fact about Gris-PEG To clear up your infection completely, continue taking Gris-PEG as prescribed until your doctor tells you to stop. Although some improvement may appear within a few days, you need to take Gris-PEG for an extended period. Gris-PEG precautions if you are pregnant or breastfeeding Gris-PEG should not be used during pregnancy. The birth of twins that were joined together has been reported, although rarely, in women who took Gris-PEG during the first 3 months of pregnancy. In addition, studies in rats and dogs have shown that Gris-PEG causes birth defects and other problems. It is not known if Gris-PEG is excreted in breast milk. However, Gris-PEG has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies. You may get drowsy or dizzy; until you know how Gris-PEG affects you, do not drive, or use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness. Alcohol may make you drowsier, and increase flushing and a rapid heartbeat. Avoid alcoholic drinks. Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths. To help prevent re-infection, wear freshly washed cotton, not synthetic, clothing. After bathing make sure your skin is quite dry. Fungal infections like moist conditions. Do not walk about barefoot.|
