|Grisactin belongs to the group of medicines called antifungals. Grisactin is used to treat fungus infections of the skin, hair, fingernails, and toenails. Grisactin may be taken alone or used along with medicines that are applied to the skin for fungus infections.|

|Grisactin is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails. When given by mouth Grisactin concentrates itself in keratin, a protein which is present in all of these areas. Grisactin is thought to work by interfering with fungal cell growth and replication. Grisactin does not kill an established fungal infection but instead prevents infection of new keratin in these areas. Grisactin is frequently used to treat fungal infections of the nail bed and ringworm (tinea) that has not responded to other forms of treatment.|
|Grisactin Dosage: How should you take Product|
|To minimize stomach irritation and help your body absorb the drug, take Grisactin at meal times or with food or whole milk. If you are on a low fat diet, check with your doctor. Observe good hygiene during treatment to help control infection and prevent re-infection. The usual treatment periods for various ringworm infections are: Ringworm of the scalp-4 to 6 weeks Ringworm of the body-2 to 4 weeks Athletes foot-4 to 8 weeks The usual treatment period, depending on the rate of growth, for ringworm of the fingernails is at least 4 months and for ringworm of the toenails at least 6 months. Adults Ringworm of the Body, Groin and Thigh, Scalp The usual dose of Grisactin is 250 milligrams a day taken as a single dose or divided into smaller doses, as determined by your doctor. Athletes Foot, Ringworm of the Nails The usual dose of Grisactin is 500 milligrams a day divided into smaller doses, as determined by your doctor. Children A single daily dose of Grisactin is effective in children with ringworm of the scalp. The usual dose of Grisactin is 3.3 milligrams per pound of body weight per day. This means that children weighing 35 to 60 pounds will take 125 to 187.5 milligrams a day, and children weighing more than 60 pounds will take 187.5 to 375 milligrams a day. No dose of Grisactin has been established for children 2 years of age and under. If you miss a Grisactin dose If you miss a dose of Grisactin, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses of Grisactin. |Most Important Fact about Grisactin To clear up your infection completely, continue taking Grisactin as prescribed until your doctor tells you to stop. Although some improvement may appear within a few days, you need to take Grisactin for an extended period. Grisactin precautions if you are pregnant or breastfeeding Grisactin should not be used during pregnancy. The birth of twins that were joined together has been reported, although rarely, in women who took Grisactin during the first 3 months of pregnancy. In addition, studies in rats and dogs have shown that Grisactin causes birth defects and other problems. It is not known if Grisactin is excreted in breast milk. However, Grisactin has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies. Special warnings about Grisactin Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not begin to improve in 1 to 2 weeks. Oral contraceptives that contain estrogen may not work properly while you take Grisactin. Use an additional method of birth control while you take Grisactin and for one month afterwards. You may get drowsy or dizzy; until you know how Grisactin affects you, do not drive, or use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness. Alcohol may make you drowsier, and increase flushing and a rapid heartbeat. Avoid alcoholic drinks. Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths. To help prevent re-infection, wear freshly washed cotton, not synthetic, clothing. After bathing make sure your skin is quite dry. Fungal infections like moist conditions. Do not walk about barefoot.|
