|Drug Class: What is Zofran and why is it prescribed?|
|Generic Zofran (ondansetron hydrochloride) helps to relieve nausea and vomiting, especially when associated with the treatment of cancer (chemotherapy).
Generic Zofran may also be used to prevent or treat nausea and vomiting that occurs after surgery and radiation therapy, and occasionally is used to treat severe vomiting during pregnancy.
|Zofran Mechanism: How does Zofran work?|
|Generic Zofran is a highly selective serotonin (5HT3) receptor blocker that acts in the brain and gut, although the exact way in which it works is unknown. Generic Zofran is thought that serotonin receptor blockade prevents signals from reaching the vomiting centre in the brain and thereby prevents vomiting.
Anti-cancer medicines and radiotherapy may cause the release of serotonin in the small intestine, setting off the vomiting reflex. Generic Zofran blocks this process.
Thus, the effect of Generic Zofran in the management of the nausea and vomiting induced by anticancer (cytotoxic) medicines and radiotherapy is probably due to blockade of serotonin receptors on neurons located both in the brain and peripheral nervous system. The mechanisms of action in post-operative nausea and vomiting are not known but there may be common pathways with cytotoxic induced nausea and vomiting.
