Generic Flomax (Tamsulosin) blocks the effects of this chemical on the muscle cells and causes the muscles to relax. This results in a decrease in obstruction to the flow of urine. There are other drugs which block alpha adrenergic nerves throughout the body and which are used in treating diseases of the heart, blood vessels, and prostate for example, prazosin (Minipress), terazosin (Hytrin), doxazosin (Cardura), and alfuzosin (Uroxatral).

Generic Flomax (Tamsulosin) is more active against the alpha adrenergic nerves of the prostate and bladder neck than these other drugs and has a lesser effect on alpha adrenergic nerves elsewhere in the body. For this reason, Generic Flomax (Tamsulosin) causes fewer side effects, especially low blood pressure, than other alpha adrenergic blocking drugs. Moreover, Generic Flomax (Tamsulosin) therapy can be started at the optimum dose whereas other alpha adrenergic blocking drugs need to be started at low doses with the doses slowly increased over time in order to minimize the side effects.

Generic Flomax was approved by the FDA in 1997.

If you miss a Generic Flomax dose
Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next Generic Flomax dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 Generic Flomax doses at once.

If you miss several Generic Flomax doses in a row, resume treatment with a dose of 1 capsule daily and check with your doctor on how to proceed.

Adult men
The recommended starting dose of Generic Flomax is 1 capsule (0.4 milligram) daily, half an hour following the same meal each day. Your doctor may increase the dose to 2 capsules (0.8 milligram) once a day if needed.

Generic Flomax Overdose
Generic Flomax taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect a Generic Flomax Overdose, seek medical treatment immediately.

Special warnings about Generic Flomax
Remember that, in a few men, Generic Flomax can cause a drop in blood pressure upon first standing up, which in turn can lead to dizziness or fainting. Avoid driving and other hazardous tasks for 12 hours after your first dose or a dosage increase, and be careful to stand up slowly until youre sure the drug wont make you dizzy. If you do become dizzy, sit down until it passes.

Although the problem is extremely rare (affecting perhaps 1 in 50,000) Generic Flomax has been known to cause priapism--a painful, persistent erection unrelated to sexual activity. If you develop this side effect, call your doctor without delay. The condition can lead to permanent impotence if not treated immediately.

Why Generic Flomax should not be prescribed?
If Generic Flomax gives you an allergic reaction, you should not take the drug.

Side effects of Generic Flomax cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Flomax.

More common side effects of Generic Flomax may include:

Abnormal ejaculation, back pain, chest pain, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, infection, nausea, runny nose, sinus problems, sleepiness, sore throat, weakness.

Less common side effects of Generic Flomax may include:

Decreased sex drive, dental problems, insomnia, vision problems.

Rare side effects of Generic Flomax may include:

Constipation, fainting, low blood pressure upon standing, painful persistent erection, palpitations, vertigo, vomiting.
