Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome that are caused by stomach acid.

Generic Protonix 20 mg (pantoprazole), like other proton-pump inhibitors, blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. By blocking the enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this allows the stomach and esophagus to heal.

Generic Protonix 20 mg may be taken with or without food. Do not chew, crush, or split the delayed-release tablets. If you are taking antacids you may continue to do so.

If you miss a Generic Protonix 20 mg dose: Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next Generic Protonix 20 mg dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular Generic Protonix 20 mg schedule. Never take two Generic Protonix 20 mg doses at once.

If Generic Protonix 20 mg is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Generic Protonix 20 mg with the following: Ampicillin (Omnipen) Iron Ketoconazole (Nizoral)

Generic Protonix 20 mg is highly effective. In most patients, stomach acid secretion drops 85 to 95 percent after a single week of treatment.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding Although no harmful effects of Generic Protonix 20 mg during pregnancy are known, there's no definite proof of safety either. Generic Protonix 20 mg is therefore recommended during pregnancy

Side effects of Generic Protonix 20 mg cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Protonix 20 mg.

More common side effects of Generic Protonix 20 mg may include: Diarrhea, headache.

Less common side effects of Generic Protonix 20 mg may include: Abdominal pain, burping, gas, nausea, vomiting.

Rare side effects of Generic Protonix 20 mg
