| Silvadene is used along with other medications to prevent and treat
wound infections in people with second- and third-degree burns.
Silvadene is effective against a variety of bacteria as well as yeast. Silvadene is available in a cream form. Cream 1% is applied directly to the skin.
|Drug Mechanism: How does Silvadene work?|
| The exact mechanism by which Silvadene/silver sulfadiazine exerts its anti-infective
activity is unknown. Both free silver and the sulfonamide moiety may exert activity,
but the drug does not inhibit folic acid synthesis as other sulfonamides do.
Silvadene disrupts bacteria by damaging the cell membrane and the cell wall rather than by inhibiting folic acid synthesis. Silvadene has a wide spectrum of bactericidal activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Organisms that are susceptible
|Dosage: How should you take Silvadene?|
Silvadene cream is for external use only. Bathe the burned area daily.
You should continue using Silvadene Cream until the area has healed or
is ready for skin grafting. Clean your skin and apply Silvadene with
a sterile, gloved hand. Apply a thin layer (about one-sixteenth of an inch)
to the affected area.
|Possible food and drug interactions with Silvadene|
|If Silvadene is used with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Silvadene with the following: Topical enzyme preparations such as Panafil and Santyl, that contain collagenase, papain, or sutilains.|
