Oxytetracycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is also used with other medicines for treating acne. Oxytetracycline may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Oxytetracycline belongs to a group of antibiotics called tetracyclines. Oxytetracycline is an antibiotic that has the ability to inhibit the growth of a wide variety of bacteria. Oxytetracycline interferes with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to multiply and divide. This inhibits the ability of the bacteria to grow (bacteriostatic) and therefore stops the spread of the infection.

For oral dosage form (capsules):
For bacterial or protozoal infections:

Adults and teenagers
250 to 500 milligrams of Oxytetracycline every six hours.

Children older than 8 years of age
Dose is based on body weight. The usual dose of Oxytetracycline is 6.25 to 12.5 mg per kilogram (kg) (2.8 to 5.7 mg per pound) of body weight every six hours.

Infants and children 8 years of age and younger
Oxytetracycline is usually not used in young children because tetracyclines

The absorption of Oxytetracycline is reduced by:

• Quinapril (ACE inhibitor)
• Antacids
• Kaolin
• Calcium salts and dairy products
• Iron
• Tripotassium dicitrato-bismuthate and sucralfate (ulcer-healing drugs)
• Zinc salts
• Magnesium salts

Oxytetracycline also reduces the absorption of iron and zinc salts.

Oxytetracycline may reduce the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill.
