Possible food and drug interactions with Oxytetracycline

The absorption of Oxytetracycline is reduced by:

• Quinapril (ACE inhibitor)
• Antacids
• Kaolin
• Calcium salts and dairy products
• Iron
• Tripotassium dicitrato-bismuthate and sucralfate (ulcer-healing drugs)
• Zinc salts
• Magnesium salts

Oxytetracycline also reduces the absorption of iron and zinc salts.

Oxytetracycline may reduce the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill.

Oxytetracycline may increase the blood thinning effects of anticoagulants such as warfarin.

If Oxytetracycline is taken with acitretin, isotretinoin or tretinoin there may be an increased risk of developing raised pressure within the skull (benign intracranial hypertension).

Oxytetracycline should be avoided in patients on diuretics as it can cause a rise in blood urea nitrogen levels.

Oxytetracycline may decrease the effectiveness of penicillins.
