Alphagan P (brimonidine tartarate ophthalmic solution) 0.15% is a medication in the form of an eye drop that is used to reduce pressure in the eye for patients with increased pressure or open-angle glaucoma.
Alphagan P is a reformulation of an older medication called Alphagan (brimonidine tartarate ophthalmic solution) 0.2%.

Alphagan P was developed to achieve comparable effectiveness of Alphagan and improve its side-effect profile, particularly as it pertains to ocular allergy.

Alphagan P is used in the treatment of glaucoma. This is a condition where the fluid drainage from the eye is impaired, resulting in fluid build-up and increased pressure in the eye.

Alphagan P acts on receptors (alpha-receptors) in the blood vessels of the eye causing them to constrict. These blood vessels control the production of the watery fluid that fills the rear of the eye. When the blood vessels constrict there is a decrease in the production of this watery fluid.

The usual dose of Alphagan P is 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily, approximately 8 hours apart.

Although specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with Alphagan P ophthalmic solution, the possibility of an additive or potentiating effect with CNS depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives, or anesthetics) should be considered. Alpha-agonists, as a class, may reduce pulse and blood pressure. Caution in using concomitant drugs such as beta-blockers (ophthalmic and systemic), anti-hypertensives and/or cardiac glycosides is advised.
