Ditropan relaxes the bladder muscle and reduces spasms. Ditropan is used to treat the urgency, frequency, leakage, incontinence, and painful or difficult urination caused by a neurogenic bladder (altered bladder function due to a nervous system abnormality).

It exerts direct antispasmodic effect on smooth muscle and inhibits the muscarinic action of acetylcholine on smooth muscle.

It also has a moderate anticholinergic effect, but exerts four to ten times the antispasmodic effect.

Ditropan Dosage

Ditropan Dosage For Adults
The usual Ditropan dose is one 5-milligram tablet or 1 teaspoonful of syrup taken 2 to 3 times a day, but not more than 4 times a day.

Ditropan Dosage For Children over 5 Years of Age
The usual Ditropan doses is one 5-milligram tablet or 1 teaspoonful of syrup taken 2 times a day, but not more than 3 times a day. Ditropan is not recommended for children under 5.

Ditropan XL Dosage

If Ditropan is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either may be increased, decreased or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ditropan with alcohol or sedatives such as Halcion or Restoril because increased drowsiness may occur.
You should also check with your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

• Alendronate (Fosamax)
• Etidronate (Didronel)
• Pamidronate (Aredia)
• Risedronate (Actonel)
• Tiludronate (Skelid)

• Heat prostration (fever and heat stroke due to decreased sweating) can occur when Ditropan is administered in the presence of high environmental temperature.
• Ditropan may produce drowsiness (somnolence) or blurred vision.
• Alcohol may enhance the drowsiness caused by Ditropan
• Ditropan can make the mouth dry. Sucking hard candies or melting bits of ice in your mouth can remedy the problem
