Drug Mechanism: How does Ovral work?

Ovral works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and causing changes in the mucus of the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to penetrate and for an egg to implant.

Ovral prevents pregnancy by inhibiting the release of the hormones LH (Leutinizing hormone) and FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone) from the pituitary gland in the brain. LH and FSH play key roles in the development of the egg and preparation of the lining of the uterus for implantation of the embryo. Norgestrel also makes the uterine mucus that surrounds the egg more difficult for sperm to penetrate and, therefore, for fertilization to take place. In some women, Norgestrel inhibits ovulation (release of the egg).

In addition, Ovral produces alterations in the genital tract, including changes in the cervical mucus, rendering it unfavorable for sperm penetration even if ovulation occurs. Changes in the endometrium may also occur, producing an unfavorable environment for nidation (the organic process whereby a fertilized egg becomes implanted in the lining of the uterus of placental mammals). Ovral may alter the tubal transport of the ova through the fallopian tubes.
