Drug Mechanism: How does Migranal work?

Migranal is a migraine-specific serotonin agonist that works at multiple receptor sites.

Ergotamine causes constriction of peripheral and cranial blood vessels. The amplitude of pulsations in the cranial arteries is reduced as is also extracranial blood flow. Ergotamine also reduces hyperfusion in the basilar artery territory.

Caffeine potentiates the action of Ergotamine.

Migranal attacks migraine at its source by selectively binding to receptors in the brain that regulate the release of serotonin, a chemical considered to play a key role in the development of migraine.

Migranal thus prevents blood vessels in your head form expanding and causing migraine headaches.
