|Drug Class: What is Biltricide and why is Biltricide prescribed?|
Biltricide is an anthelmintic. Anthelmintics are used for treating worm infections.
Biltricide is used mainly to treat fluke and tapeworm infections. The fluke infections are also known as schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis, or opisthorchiasis.
Biltricide does not work for pinworm or other roundworm infections.
|Drug Mechanism: How does Biltricide work?|
The exact mechanism of action is still being investigated. However, Biltricide is found to produce vacuolisation of schistosome tegument and increase Calcium permeability of parasite. This results in rapid contraction of musculature, paralysis and death. Biltricide also apparently exposes otherwise inaccessible antigens as targets for host antibodies, increasing worms susceptibilty to immune responses.
Biltricide affects scistosomes, immature forms and the cercariae (which penetrate the skin).
