Megesterol is a man-made chemical similar to the natural female hormone called progesterone.
Megesterol tablets are used for treating breast cancer and endometrial cancer.
Megestrol is also used to treat loss of appetite and weight loss resulting from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).Megesterol has also been used with estrogen to prevent pregnancy.
|Drug Mechanism: How does Megesterol work?|
Megesterol is a potent synthetic progesterone hormone with properties similar to those of natural progesterone. Megesterol is used to treat advanced cancers of the breast and the lining of the womb (endometrium), which are responsive to hormononal treatment.
Some types of cancers have hormone receptors on their cells. If a certain hormone binds to the receptor, signals are sent to the cancer cell to grow. Megesterol works by binding to these receptors, thereby preventing other hormones
|Dosage: How should you take Megesterol?|
Take Megesterol tablets by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water.
Megestrol can be taken with or without food. Better absorption and blood levels maybe achieved if Megesterol is taken without food.
Megestrol is given in doses through the day for several months as treatment for cancer.
Doses up to 800mg daily have been used for weight loss.
