| Drug Class: What is Micardis and why is Micardis prescribed? | ||
| Micardis (telmisartan) belongs to the class of medicines called angiotensin II inhibitors. Micardis helps bring down high blood pressure (hypertension) to normal levels. High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. High blood pressure may also increase the risk of heart attacks. |

| Drug Mechanism: How does Micardis work? | ||
| Micardis contains the active ingredient telmisartan, which is a type of medicine called an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Micardis works by preventing the action of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II normally acts on special receptors in the body, with two main results. Firstly, it causes the peripheral blood vessels to narrow, and secondly, it stimulates the production of another hormone called aldosterone. Aldosterone causes salt and water to be retained by the kidneys, which increases the volume of fluid in the blood |

Micardis when taken together with potassium containing salt substitutes, potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone or potassium supplements there is an increased risk of high blood potassium (hyperkalaemia), particularly in the elderly. These should only be used together with regular monitoring of blood potassium levels. Micardis when taken together |
