Ponstel (Mefenamic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Ponstel helps relieve inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Ponstel also helps to relieve mild to moderate pain, including menstrual cramps or premenstrual discomfort.

Ponstel works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is an enzyme that is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Take Ponstel capsules by mouth.

Swallow Ponstel capsules whole with a full glass of water; take capsules in an upright or sitting position. Taking a sip of water first, before taking the capsules, may help you swallow them.

If possible take bedtime doses at least 10 minutes before lying down. You can take Ponstel with food to prevent stomach upset.

Ponstel may increase the blood levels of the following medicines, resulting in an increased risk of side effects:

• Lithium
• Methotrexate.

There may rarely be an increased risk of seizures if Ponstel is taken with quinolone-type antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin.

Ponstel may reduce the effectiveness of the following medicines for high blood pressure:

• diuretics such as furosemide (frusemide)
• ACE inhibitors such as captopril
