Seromycin (Cycloserine) is an antibiotic. Seromycin kills or interferes with the growth of bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

Seromycin is usually reserved for patients with tuberculosis who have been unsuccessfully treated with other medicines.

Seromycin is an antibiotic that is used to kill the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). Bacteria have an external cell wall that is reinforced by molecules called peptidoglycans. This cell wall is vital for protection against the normal environment of the body in which the bacteria live.

Seromycin works by blocking the formation of these peptidoglycans. By doing this the walls of the bacteria become weak and it results in the death of the bacteria.

Tuberculosis bacteria are difficult to eliminate, therefore

Take Seromycin capsules by mouth. Swallow capsules whole with a full glass of water. You can take Seromycin with or without food.

For treatment of tuberculosis:

Adults and teenagers
250 milligrams (mg) two times a day to start. Your doctor may slowly increase your dose up to 250 mg three or four times a day. Seromycin must be taken along with other medicines to treat tuberculosis.

Children
Your doctor must determine use and dose

• Alcohol: If Seromycin and alcohol are taken at the same time there is an increased risk of seizures.
• Phenytoin: If Seromycin is taken at the same time as phenytoin (an anti-epileptic), the amount of phenytoin in the blood is increased. This increases the risk of toxicity from the phenytoin.
• Isoniazid. The combination of Seromycin and isoniazid increases the risk of toxicity to the central nervous system and patients on these two anti-TB drugs should be monitored closely.
