Drug Mechanism: How does ReVia work?
ReVia belongs to a class of medicines known as opioid antagonists. Opioids are similar to morphine in structure and are commonly used for their potent, pain killing properties. Opioids, especially illegal opioids such as heroin, are also known to cause dependence or addiction in individuals, if used for long periods of time.
ReVia acts by specifically blocking opioid receptors in the brain to block the action of opioids, and as such, it is used in the treatment of opioid addiction. As a result the individual taking ReVia will no longer experience the kick or euphoria previously experienced with opioid use.
ReVia is used in combination with other forms of therapy in the treatment of opioid addiction as an aid to maintaining abstinence following the withdrawal of opioids. However in most individuals the craving for opioids remains. Therefore good social and psychological support is strongly recommended to discourage opioid use.
