|Drug Class: What is Avalide and why is Avalide prescribed?|
| Avalide is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure.
One component, irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor inhibitor, also called angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Avalide (Irbesartan) prevents the hormone angiotensin II from constricting the blood vessels, thereby allowing blood to flow more freely and keeping blood pressure down.
The other component, hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide
|Drug Mechanism: How does Avalide work?|
| Avalide (Irbesartan) works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals
that tighten the blood vessels, making blood flow more smoothly.
Avalide (Hydrochlorothiazide) is in a class of medications called diuretics (water pills). Avalide works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.
Together, Avalide, hydrochlorothiazide and irbesartan are used to reduce hypertension (high blood pressure).
|Dosage: How should you take Avalide?|
Take each dose of Avalide with a full glass of water. Avalide can be taken with or without food.
If you miss an Avalide dose: Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next Avalide dose, skip the dose of Avalide you missed and go back to your regular Avalide schedule. Never take 2 doses of Avalide at the same time.
