Drug Class: What is Amoxil and why is it prescribed?
Amoxil 500 mg , Amoxicillin is a penicillin-like antibiotic, is used to treat
a wide variety of infections, including: gonorrhea, middle ear infections, skin
infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and infections of
the genital and urinary tract.
Amoxil 500 mg also is used before some surgery or dental work to prevent infection.
Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.
Amoxil 500 mg also is used occasionally to treat a chlamydia infection during
pregnancy. In combination with other drugs such as Prevacid and Biaxin, it is
also used to treat duodenal ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria (ulcers in the
wall of the small intestine near the exit from the stomach).
