Drug Class: What is Nexium and why is it prescribed?
Generic Nexium 20 mg, Esomeprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors
(PPIs), which block the production of acid, by the stomach. Other drugs in the
same class include omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid),
rabeprazole (Aciphex) and pantoprazole (Protonix). Chemically, Generic Nexium 20 mg (esomeprazole)
is very similar to omeprazole. Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment
of conditions such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease
(GERD) and the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which all are caused by stomach acid.
Generic Nexium 20 mg relieves heartburn and other symptoms caused by the backflow of
stomach acid into the canal to the stomach (the esophagus)--a condition known
as gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also prescribed to heal the damage (erosive
esophagitis) that reflux disease can cause.
Prescribed in combination with the antibiotics Biaxin and Amoxil, Generic Nexium 20 mg
is also used to treat the infection that causes most duodenal ulcers (ulcers occurring
just beyond the exit from the stomach).
Like its sister drug Prilosec, Generic Nexium 20 mg works by reducing the production
of stomach acid.
