| Sumycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, is used to treat bacterial infections such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus fever, and tick fevers; upper respiratory infections; pneumonia; gonorrhea; amoebic infections; and urinary tract infections. | Drug Mechanism: How does Sumycin work? | ||
| Sumycin (Tetracycline) inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by blocking the attachment of the transfer RNA-amino acid to the ribosome. More precisely Sumycin is an inhibitor of the codon-anticodon interaction. Sumycin can also inhibit protein synthesis in the host, but are less likely to reach the concentration required because eukaryotic cells do not have a tetracycline uptake mechanism. | ||
| Dosage: How should you take Sumycin? | ||
| Sumycin should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Be sure to use the entire prescription. If you are taking a liquid form of the drug, shake well before using. Do not use outdated Sumycin. Outdated Sumycin is highly toxic to the kidneys. Do not take antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium (e.g., Mylanta, Maalox) while taking Sumycin. They will affect the absorption of Sumycin/Tetracycline. Take Sumycin 1 hour before or 2 hours after |

| If Sumycin is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered.
