| Drug Class: What is Singulair and why is it prescribed? | ||
| Generic Singulair 5 mg chewable, (Montelukast) is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist for the treatment of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Generic Singulair 5 mg chewable reduces the swelling and inflammation that tend to close up the airways, and relaxes the walls of the bronchial tubes, expanding the airways and permitting more air to pass through. |
||
| Drug Mechanism: How does it work? | ||
| Leukotrienes are a group of naturally occurring chemicals in the body that promote inflammation in asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis and in other diseases in which inflammation is important (such as allergy). They are formed by cells, released, and then bound to other cells, and it is the binding to these other cells that stimulates the cells to promote inflammation. Generic Singulair 5 mg chewable (Montelukast) works in a manner similar to zafirlukast (Accolate), blocking the binding of some leukotrienes. |
||
| Dosage: How should you take Singulair? | ||
| Take a Generic Singulair tablet regularly every evening, whether or not you have
any symptoms. The tablet can be taken with or without food. |
||
| Possible food and drug interactions when taking Singulair | ||
| If Generic Singulair 5 mg chewable is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered.
