| Drug Class: What is Singulair and why is it prescribed? | ||
| Generic Singulair 10 mg, (Montelukast) is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist for the treatment of asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Generic Singulair 10 mg reduces the swelling and inflammation that tend to close up the airways, and relaxes the walls of the bronchial tubes, expanding the airways and permitting more air to pass through. |
||
| Drug Mechanism: How does it work? | ||
| Leukotrienes are a group of naturally occurring chemicals in the body that promote inflammation in asthma and seasonal allergic rhinitis and in other diseases in which inflammation is important (such as allergy). They are formed by cells, released, and then bound to other cells, and it is the binding to these other cells that stimulates the cells to promote inflammation. Generic Singulair 10 mg (Montelukast) works in a manner similar to zafirlukast (Accolate), blocking the binding of some leukotrienes. |
||
| Dosage: How should you take Singulair? | ||
| Take a Generic Singulair tablet regularly every evening, whether or not you have
any symptoms. The tablet can be taken with or without food. |
||
| Possible food and drug interactions when taking Singulair | ||
| If Generic Singulair 10 mg is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Generic Singulair 10 mg with the following: Phenobarbital, Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rimactane). |
||
| Special information on Singulair | ||
| Generic Singulair 10 mg should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. If you
are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is
not known whether Generic Singulair 10 mg appears in breast milk. Because many drugs
do make their way into breast milk, use Generic Singulair 10 mg with caution if you are
breastfeeding. |
||
| Singulair side effects | ||
| The most common side effects of Generic Singulair 10 mg with montelukast are headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, sore throat, and rhinitis (inflammation of the inner lining of the nose). These side effects of Generic Singulair 10 mg occur in 1 in 50 to 1 in 7 persons who take montelukast. |
