Zofran side effects
|Drug class: What is zofran and why is it prescribed?|
| Zofran is used for the prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by radiation therapy and chemotherapy for cancer, and, in some cases, to prevent these problems following surgery.
To ensure the maximum effect, it is important to take all doses of Zofran exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
|Drug Mechanism: How does it work?|
|Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT 3 receptor antagonist. While its mechanism of action has not been fully characterized, ondansetron is not a dopamine-receptor antagonist. Serotonin receptors of the 5-HT 3 type are present both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the area postrema. It is not certain whether ondansetron s antiemetic action is mediated centrally, peripherally, or in both sites. However, cytotoxic chemotherapy appears to be associated with release of serotonin from the enterochromaffin cells of the small intestine.|
|Dosage: How should you take this medication?|
| Your doctor will tell you how much drug to take and how often, depending on the type of therapy you will be having.
Zofran is available in three forms: an oral solution, tablets that you swallow with water, and orally disintegrating tablets that can be swallowed with saliva alone (Zofran ODT). If you re taking the orally disintegrating tablets, don t remove them from the blister pack until it s time for a dose.
