|Generic Avapro, Irbesartan is used to treat high blood pressure. A member of the new family of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, it works by preventing the hormone angiotensin II from narrowing the blood vessels, an action that tends to raise blood pressure. Generic Avapro may be prescribed alone or with other blood pressure medications.
In people with type 2-diabetes and high blood pressure, Generic Avapro is also prescribed to stave off damage to the kidneys, often delaying the need for dialysis and a kidney transplant
|Avapro Mechanism: How does Avapro work?|
|Generic Avapro, Irbesartan is among a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers, is used to treat high blood pressure. and is similar to losartan (Cozaar) and valsartan (Diovan).
All three drugs block angiotensin II, a hormone that causes the arteries and veins to narrow. As a result, the arteries and veins dilate (become larger), and blood pressure is reduced. When the blood pressure is reduced, the heart doesn\'t have to work as hard to pump blood.
Irbesartan may also be used to treat heart failure and kidney problems caused by diabetes.
Irbesartan was approved by the FDA in 1998.
