Drug Class: What is Reserpine and why is Reserpine prescribed?
Reserpine is an antihypertensive. Reserpine helps lower high blood pressure (hypertension) to normal levels. High blood pressure levels can cause you to have a stroke, get heart failure, or damage your kidneys.
Reserpine is not a cure for high blood pressure.
Drug Mechanism: How does Reserpine work?
Reserpine produces biphasic (dilatation and constrictor) reactions on the part of the cerebral, extracranial and peripheral vessels. The dilatation reaction occurred immediately after the drug administration, it was intermittent and preserved after the blockade of the adreno and cholinoreceptors. During electric stimulation of the cervical sympathetic ganglia, Reserpine insignificantly reduced constrictor reactions of the vessels and inhibited depressor reactions.
Dosage: How should you take Reserpine ?
Take Reserpine tablets by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. If Reserpine upsets your stomach you can take it with food or milk.
