Nimotop is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers.
Nimotop affects the flow of calcium in and out of certain cells in your body and relaxes blood vessels.
Nimotop is used to treat subarachnoid hemorrhage, a condition in which severe headaches and stiff neck are caused by bleeding into the space around the brain.
Nimotop may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
|Drug Mechanism: How does Nimotop work?|
Nimotop belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers, which act on the heart and blood vessels.
Nimotop slows the movement of calcium through cells, which has two results. Firstly, Nimotop decreases the rate at which the heart beats. Secondly, it has a widening effect on blood vessels, particularly those in the brain. This is helpful after a bleed in the brain, when the blood vessels can tighten, reducing the flow of blood to the brain.

Take Nimotop on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after meals.

Nimotop increases the effect of medicines used to lower blood pressure.
When first taken with other blood pressure lowering medication Nimotop may cause a large drop in blood pressure and therefore dizziness.
The effect of Nimotop is decreased by phenytoin, carbamazapine and phenobarbital so the dose may need to be increased.
Sodium valproate may increase the blood levels of Nimotop so dose may need to be reduced.
