Drug Class: What is Verapamil and why is it prescribed?
Verapamil can be prescribed for several heart and blood pressure problems. Verapamil is taken for angina (chest pain due to clogged cardiac arteries), as well as irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure. The longer-acting (SR) i.e Verapamil SR form is typically used only for high blood pressure.
Verapamil is also prescribed to prevent migraine headache and asthma and to treat manic depression
Drug Mechanism: How does it work?
Verapamil SR contains Verapamil hydrochloride which belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers, which act on the heart and blood vessels.
Verapamil slows the movement of calcium through cells, which has two results. Firstly, it decreases the rate at which the heart beats. As a result, the heart uses less energy and the pain of angina is prevented or relieved. Secondly, it has a mild widening effect on blood vessels and therefore reduces blood pressure.
Dosage: How should you take this medication?
Verapamil SR should be taken with food. Verapamil SR must be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, broken, or chewed. Take Verapamil SR exactly as prescribed, even if you are feeling well. Try not to miss any Verapamil SR doses. If Verapamil SR is not taken regularly, your condition can get worse. Check with your doctor before you stop taking Verapamil SR; a slow reduction in the Verapamil SR dose may be required.
